Different Skin Types

There are several different types of skin and we’re here to talk you through them so let’s get started:

Normal skin:

What is ‘normal’ skin you ask? Normal skin is well balanced: neither too oily nor too dry. 'Normal' is a term widely used to refer to well-balanced skin. Characteristics of normal skin include a regular texture, no or few imperfections and a soft appearance.

Tips for Normal Skin:

Normal skin may not have obvious problems, but it still requires proper care to stay healthy and youthful.

  • Treat immediate issues- Treat your skin according to its needs in the moment. Whether it’s feeling a little dry or a little spotty, adjust your product to treat the issue at that time.
  • Maintain your skin’s health- If you have no major issues or concerns to address, just keep your skincare routine to how it is. Consistency is key!
  • Protect your skin from future damage- Regardless of skin type, you should always be protecting your skin from harmful UV Rays and pollution by wearing an SPF everyday without fail and adding antioxidant-rich products to your routine.

Normal Skincare Routine:

To ensure you’re maintaining healthy, strong skin you must stick to a consistent routine day and night. For normal skin we recommend the following for the morning routine:

Cleanser - DermaQuest Essential Daily Cleanser
Serum - DermaQuest Essential B5 hydrating serum
Moisturiser - DermaQuest Essential Moisturiser
SPF - DermaQuest Sheer Zinc SPF30

And for the evening routine:

Cleanser (same as morning)
Serum (same as morning)
Eye cream - DermaQuest Peptide Eye Firming Serum
Moisturiser (same as morning)
Face oil - Obagi Pro-C 10%

Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin is not a medical diagnosis. It is generally used to describe skin with reduced tolerance to the application of cosmetics and personal care products. You may not even know you have sensitive skin until you have a bad reaction to a new product.

Conditions that cause sensitive skin are rarely serious. You can usually keep your symptoms under control with a few simple changes to your skin care routine.

Tips For Sensitive Skin:

You also may have sensitive skin if your skin reacts easily to new products, stings, tingles, flushes, turns pink, is bumpy, or breaks out easily. Here are some tips to take care of your sensitive skin:

  • Avoid anything fragranced - Choose sensitised ranges
  • Choose sensitive skin products - Rich in moisturisers to help keep your skin balanced; Dimethicone, glycerin, and petrolatum are all good options that are generally well-tolerated.
  • Don’t over use products - Keep it simple, applying the correct amount and not using too many different products.
  • Don’t use hot water - Showering or washing your face with water that is too hot can be damaging to your ski especially if it is sensitive. Stick to a lukewarm temperature.

Sensitive Skincare Routine:

As stated above, too many products isn’t good for your skin if it’s sensitive so keep it to a minimum. For the morning routine we recommend:

Cleanser - DermaQuest Delicate Cleansing Cream
Serum - DermaQuest Delicate Soothing Serum
Moisturiser - DermaQuest Delicate Daily Moisturiser
SPF - DermaQuest Sheer Zinc SPF30

And for the evening routine:

Cleanser- (same as morning)
Serum- (same as morning)
Moisturiser- (same as morning)

Example of Sensitive Skin

Dry Skin

Dry is used to describe a skin type that produces less sebum than normal skin. As a result of the lack of sebum, dry skin lacks the lipids that it needs to retain moisture and build a protective shield against external influences. Oily skin has a glossy shine and visible pores.

Tips For Dry Skin:

To keep the skin hydrated and less dry follow these steps.

  • Avoid over-exposure to direct sunlight.
  • Avoid being in areas of low humidity – try using a humidifier at home
  • Moisturise at least twice a day. In the morning use a hydrating moisturiser such as DermaQuest Essential Moisturiser.
  • Spend less time showering or taking a bath, ensuring that the water is warm, rather than hot.
  • Drink lots of water (aim for 2-3 litres a day ) hydrating inside is just as important as hydrating outside.

Combination Skin

One of the most common skin types, combination skin is when you have two different skin types of skin on your face, and it is generally both oily in parts and dry in parts. The oily part is usually on what's known as the 'T-zone', which can appear excessively oily and shiny across the forehead, down the nose and on the chin.

Tips For Combination Skin:

  • Avoid harsh soaps - Some soaps are formulated with ingredients that can strip your combination skin of vital moisture. This can trick your skin into thinking it’s dry.
  • Blot away any excess oils - Always have some tissues or blotting papers to hand to blot away any excess oil throughout the day.
  • Exfoliate regularly, but not too often - Exfoliation is a key skincare step that involves sloughing away dead skin cells from the surface of skin. It helps your complexion appear less dull and also feel smoother to the touch. Start with once a week and build it up to 2-3 times a week.

Blemished Skin

A blemish is any type of spots, discoloration, mark or flaw on the skin. When it comes to skin care, the term blemish is typically used interchangeably to describe acne.

Tips for Blemished Skin:

  • Wash your face twice a day - If you’re prone to breakouts or have oily skin, don’t skimp on washing your face as part of your morning and evening skin care routine.
  • Exfoliate - Exfoliation can help remove excess dead skin cells. If these cells stay on your skin for too long, they can clog your pores and lead to breakouts.
  • Get plenty of sleep - Not getting enough sleep may also cause your skin to break out more often. According to some studies a lack of sleep could, in some instances, cause the body to release inflammatory compounds. These compounds could cause the skin to break out or worsen acne.
  • Relax - Stress can be a major factor and cause of acne breakouts so it’s important to take time to relax and de stress.

Mature Skin

Mature skin is generally a way of saying that skin is showing signs of ageing. As you get older, your skin loses its elasticity and becomes thinner. Changes in your skin as you age are normal (and beautiful), but you may be looking for ways to put ageing on pause and keep your skin looking youthful.

Tips For Mature Skin:

  • Cleanse gently - As your skin matures, it loses moisture. The cleansing process can exacerbate dryness. It’s therefore important to choose a cleanser that is gentle. It’s still vital to remove your make-up and dirt from the day, but you need to be a little more thoughtful about how to do it. Go slowly, and treat your skin with care.
  • Exfoliate - Exfoliation helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines because it removes the build-up of dead skin cells. However, too much and you can irritate your skin. When you exfoliate your face, continue down under your chin and around your neck. Start with once a week and gradually build it up to 2-3 times a week. Try DermaQuest Algae Polishing Scrub.
  • Look after the skin around your eyes - As we age, the skin around your eyes needs particular attention. Again, if you haven’t used an eye cream before, now is the time to make one part of your routine.
  • Start using serum - If you’ve not used a serum previously, now is the time to start. It’s brilliant for locking in moisture to skin, ensuring it looks plump and fresh.
